Starting the Tula Pink 100 Modern Blocks Color Wash Quilt

Description

Could you make 100 Blocks in 100 Days? I’m using Tula Pink’s 100 Modern Quilt Block book to guide me through a 100 day block challenge. This video is all about choosing fabrics, color choices and layouts, as well as organizing the project as you get ready to set off on a modern sewing adventure.

The blocks would be wonderful as idea generators for improv piecing too! Have you made a quilt from this book? Tell us about it!

I’m using a rainbow color wash layout to predesign my quilt layout. I’ll walk you through the book format, fabric choices, and design options. After choosing a fabric theme, or throughline, you are ready to lay out some 5″ charm squares and choose colors for your modern quilt.

After the colors are chosen, add a few fabrics that coordinate with each charm square. Label your storage bags 1-100 and hang onto your fabric choices until you are ready to cut and/or sew blocks. I loved seeing the layout come together. It helped me to see what fabrics I had and what I need to get to complete the quilt.

Of course, this giant color wash layout is not necessary at the planning stage. You can simply take each color and plan 14 (plus a couple extras of your favorite colors) blocks in each color grouping in the Roy G Biv rainbow order.

New videos about my 100 day quilt start dropping Aug. 1, 2026 on my YouTube channel @happyquiltypeople

Happy Sewing!
