BERNINA Rulerwork Quilt-along Part 2

Are you guys ready for Part 2 of the BERNINA Rulerwork Quilt Along? Lots of people have posted photos of your progress in my Facebook Group or asked questions here on WeAllSew and I’ve been so excited to see your enthusiasm and progress. I love teaching and seeing people acquire new skills and learn to use their BERNINAs in different ways, so I couldn’t be more pleased that you all are enjoying this so much!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Amanda Murphy and I’m a Quilting and Longarm Spokesperson for BERNINA, teacher, fabric designer for Contempo of Benartex, author with C&T Publishing, and embroidery designer with OESD. I also design a line of patterns. Below this month’s quilting areas, I will show you some of my quilts so that you can see real-world application of the skills you are learning in this quilt-along.

For this post, I’ve filmed videos of the next four sections of the BERNINA Rulerwork Quilt-along Sampler.

Of course, you can use a straight ruler to do simple parallel line quilting which is just right for some quilts.

You can add free-motion quilting to straight lines to create something completely different. In Winter Sports, I used a straight line ruler and free-motion to create skating rinks and mountain landscapes behind the athletes.

If you would prefer to stick mostly to rulerwork, adding curved rulers into the mix can really turn the quilting up a notch. My Meadow Minis quilt is a quilt-as-you-go piece that uses just a straight line and curved ruler. (I include the quilting directions in the pattern and there are accompanying videos on my Youtube Channel, because this pattern was developed to help teach rulerwork!)

My Meadow Blooms quilt uses straight and curved rulers along with free-motion for a completely different look.

As you can see, rulerwork is well worth learning because (not only do you not have to rotate your quilt top) the creative possibilities it affords are endless!
