Boho Vibes Clutch Tutorial

As you all know, my latest collection Indie Boheme has become a total hit! It’s currently sold out and being reprinted as we speak! I am so happy and very thankful for the love and support Indie Boheme had received. For this tutorial, I decided to make another clutch. I know, another one, but this one has a unique twist. I used a Hidden Walls quilt block for the front and back of the clutch. I think this twist makes this clutch stand out! And of course, let’s not forget the stunning decorative stitches I implemented with the aid of my oh so trustworthy BERNINA! Are you ready to have fun creating the Boho Vibes clutch? Then follow the instructions below.

Materials to Sew the Boho Vibes Clutch

We are going to use fabric scraps—in my case I used scraps from projects using Indie Boheme Fabrics.

  • Fat Eighth of Pat Bravo IBH-64202 Fabric A
  • Fat Eighth of Pat Bravo IBH-74205 Fabric B
  • Fat Eighth of Pat Bravo IBH-64206 Fabric C
  • Fat Eighth of The Denim Studio by AGF DEN-L-4000 Fabric D
  • Fat Eighth of Pat Bravo IBH-74210 Fabric E  (for lining)
  • 10″ zipper
  • 1/3 yard of batting
  • 10” decorative tassels  (if desired)
  • Erasable Pen
  • Universal needles, size 80/12
  • Sewing machine and embroidery machine (I sew on a BERNINA 790)
  • Open embroidery foot (BERNINA Open embroidery foot #20/#20C/#20D), all-purpose presser foot (BERNINA Reverse Pattern Foot #1/#1C/#1D) and Zipper Presser foot (BERNINA Zipper foot # 4D)
  • Aurifil thread #4030

Cutting Instructions

  • Cut 1 (one) 2 1/2” by 18” of  Fabric A
  • Cut 1 (one) 2 1/2” by 18” of  Fabric B
  • Cut 1 (one) 2 1/2” by 18” of  Fabric C
  • Cut 1 (one) 2 1/2” by 18” of  Fabric D
  • Cut 2 (two) 10” by 5 1/2” of Fabric E
  • Cut 2 (two) 10” by 5 1/2” of Batting

Step 1- Quilt Assembly

Lay all your fabric pieces (Fabrics ABCD) as shown in the image below

This is the order in which the strips are going to be sewn. Now prep your sewing machine using the all-purpose presser foot (BERNINA Reverse Pattern Foot #1/#1C/#1D) and thread the needle with the Aurifil thread #4030.

Now, stitch all pieces together with a 1/4” seam allowance.

Once all of your strips are sewn together, cut two squares 8 1/4” x 8 1/4″.

Place one square right side up and the other one on top with the strips facing the other direction.

Pin square in place and stitch around all sides with a 1/4” seam allowance.

Cut on the diagonal on both sides, as shown  below.

Leaving you with these pieces.

Trim the corners and open each piece. With the aid of a iron, press each square and stitch in pairs.

Step 2- Satin Stitches

Now, take two 10” by 5 1/2” of Batting and prepare both pieces for satin stitches.

Using your erasable pen, draw diagonal lines 1/2” apart on Fabric D.

Prepare your machine, change your current presser foot to the Open embroidery foot #20/#20C/#20D and we will begin this side with satin stitches #471 and #466.

For satin stitch #471 adjust the upper multi functional knob to number 4.3 and lower multi functional knob to number 12.6.

For satin stitch #466 adjust the upper multi functional knob to number 3.9 and lower multi functional knob to number 9.2. This act will adjust the stitch to the desire length.

Complete these steps on both sides of Fabric D. For the other rectangle, I used stitches #471 and practical stitch #6

Step 3- Zipper

Change the presser foot on your machine to the Zipper foot #4/#4D and straight stitch close to the zipper teeth.

Get a piece of the clutch and place it with the right side of the fabric facing up. Next place the zipper facing down, as shown below, once the lining pieced is added, you will stitch on the dashed line. More explained below.

Lastly, place the 10″ by 5 1/2″ piece from Fabric E  on top and pin in place. Stitch on the dashed line, about 1/4″ from the edge.

Once that side is complete, take the last part of the clutch and grab the 10” decorative tassel. Pin in place at the bottom of the piece as instructed below.

Now place the last 10″ by 5 1/2″ piece from Fabric E, and add the piece from the previous step, and set it as instructed below with the front of the clutch facing up. And lastly, place the back of the clutch (10″ by 5 1/2″ piece from Fabric E) with the wrong side facing up, pin in place and straight stitch from top to bottom close to zipper teeth.

Lay out your pieces separating outer fabric on the left and lining on the right. Changing from your Zipper foot #4/#4D to the Reverse pattern foot #1/#1C/#1D, stitch all around using straight stitch #1 with a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a 5″ opening at the lining. Make sure the zipper is open because when you pull the clutch through, you are going to come through the zipper. After this, clip all four (4) corners. Once it’s stitched all around, pull the clutch through the open zipper, pull the corners out and stitch the opening closed. You can either hand stitch it or machine stitch it.
