Holiday Color Block Hot Pads

I am so excited to share my idea on how to make holiday color block hot pads for all your friends! It’s a quick and easy tutorial for all holiday and seasons of life. I like to use solid colors and add a little texture to the binding by using dots, ginghams, or stripes!

Materials to Make Color Blocked Hot Pads

All seam allowances are a 1/4″ unless stated otherwise.

Cutting List:
Cut 1 7.5″ x 3.25″ of holiday top color, White
Cut 1 7.5″ x 3.25″ of holiday top color, Aqua

Optional Pocket
Cut 1 7.5″ x 2″ for the top, white
Cut 1 7.5″ x 3.25″ of holiday top color,  Aqua
Cut 1 7.5″ x 3.25″ of holiday top color, Red
Cut 1 7.5″ x 7.75″ for the back of the pocket, choose your solid back

Batting:
Cut 2 7.375″ x 8.875″ of cotton batting
Cut 1 7.375″ x 8.875″ of Thermo Batting

Optional Batting for Pocket:
Cut 2 7.375″ x 7″ of cotton batting
Cut 1 7.375″ x 7″ of Insul-Bright Batting

Fabric Cut

First, take your 7.5 x 3.25 white strip and line up with 7.5 x 3.25 aqua strip, right sides together. Sew lengthwise down the strips. Using a hot iron, press seams open so it lays flat and has less bulk. Then take your 7.5″ x 3.25″ red strip and place right sides together on 7.5″ x 3.25″ aqua strip. Sew down lengthwise. Repeat using a hot iron, press seams open.

Seams Open

Note: If you are doing your optional pocket, repeat as stated above using the 7.5″ x 3.25″ strips. Make sure you follow the same order.

Batting Fabric

Now you grab your finished striped front, your three batting pieces, and back piece. You will first take your bottom layer right side down. Place one piece of regular batting, then your Insul-Bright batting, regular batting, and then place your finished striped front on top. You can now quilt as desired or do simple stitching around the seams. Making it simple, will make a fast and fun holiday gift!

Simple Stitch

When I am stitching a straight stitch by the seam, I align my foot as shown in the picture and stitch so that it’s a quarter inch away from the seam.

Line Foot

Note: If you are doing the pocket, using the pocket finished stripes, batting, and backing. Repeat the steps above, and quilt as desired.

Now you need to prepare the binding. There are so many great tutorials on the binding on We All Sew. Here are some tutorials to check out and refresh on:

binding

If you are doing an optional pocket, add binding to the top of the pocket. When sewing on the binding, start to stitch at the top left edge and sew the binding all the way around. Make sure to miter all corners. when you meet up to where you first started your binding, take a back stitch right before you get to the edge. You will want to take your hot pad off the machine. clip threads.

Tuck in Loop

You will want to iron your binding and stitch all the way up the edge in order to make your loop. Tuck in the unfinished binding into folded edges as shown in the picture above. Now fold your sewn binding into a loop and tuck into the binding as shown below.

You can either hand stitch or machine stitch your binding and loop. For this particular hot pads, I wanted to hand stitch to hide the threads. You can see in the blue how I machine stitched the loop end to tack down only. However, when I machine stitched, the stitches will show in the front,

Grab your favorite movie, and take some time to hand stitch for a more polished look.

Fun Tip: I have included an oval hot pad pattern that you cut out once you have your striped fronts done. You can take this pattern to any shape, use your creativity and have fun! You can even embellish with lace, or use patterned fabric of your choice!
