Star Wars – Baylan Skoll

Description

This Baylan Skoll costume was meticulously crafted to reflect the imposing presence of this powerful Star Wars character. Baylan Skoll is known for his strong, imposing presence as a dark Jedi in the Star Wars universe, so his costume needed to reflect the gravitas of his character, combining elements of armor and Jedi robes to symbolize his power and experience.  As a character, Baylan Skoll’s outfit blends the aesthetic of the Old Republic era with a “dark side of the force” undertone, using layered textiles, reinforced fabrics, and intricate details to convey both menace and refinement.  We chose dark and muted fabrics with metallic accents, adding depth and highlights to convey the character’s complexity as well as various textured foam substrates to emulate the armor plates, leather-like materials for belts and gauntlets, and softer fabrics for the robes and kilts.

Using my Bernina 770QE 100th Anniversary Edition sewing machine functionality to easily reinforce the multiple seams for strength and durability, as this costume will have plenty of wear.  I used my Bernina 77QE for not only sewing the garments together, but for finishing the hems and adding some trims.   I was surprised at how my machine flawlessly handled a variety of materials—from the multiple layers of thick leather for the belts, double obi and the chest and shoulder armor, to the delicate gauzy linen for robe elements.  My Bernina is the epitome of durability and precision.

The costume has already received rave reviews at recent cosplay events, and Brandon plans to enter more Cosplay costume contests soon.  The judges have been impressed with how the costume achieves the character’s imposing presence and is a realistic execution of the characters costume on the Big Screen.  I’m pleased that all the work put into this costume delivers not only a screen-accurate portrayal, but blends strength and refinement, capturing the character’s essence while maintaining comfort and functionality for my friend, Brandon.
