Stitching the Southwest, Part Seven: The Campfire
Can you hear the crackling?
The Campfire quilt block from the Stitching the Southwest Quilt Along brings the warm, lively atmosphere of a real campfire straight into your quilt project. This block stands for community, adventure, and cozy evenings under the open sky.
Whether as a standalone highlight or as part of the full quilt, this block is a real eye-catcher and adds a very special sense of coziness to your work.
The Campfire in the Southwest Quilt Along
In our “Southwest Trails” quilt, the campfire symbolizes more than just another quilt block:
- Community & coming together
- Connection to nature & outdoor adventure
- Calm, warmth & comfort
Especially in combination with the other blocks in the quilt along, a campfire is simply ‘a MUST’ in my opinion.
There are quilt blocks that are pretty. And then there are those that create a feeling.
The campfire block feels like a summer evening outside. Like that soft crackling sound. Like warmth on your face and cool air on your back. That’s exactly what I wanted to translate into fabric.
And yes, this is one of those blocks where you already know while sewing, you can create so much more from it.
A Typical Southwest Color Palette Could Be:
- Terracotta
- Mustard yellow
- Rust red
- Sand and earthy tones
Tip: With a soft color gradient, you can make the flames look especially vibrant!

Let’s Get Started With the Campfire Block!
My Fabric Choices
- Sparkler Beach (background)
- Dapple Dot Raisin (wood)
- Charcoal (log ends)
- Cinnamon, Cheddar, and Burgundy (flames)
Quick FPP Sewing Instructions
- Print only the pattern segments you actually need (all parts with letters and numbers).
- Lay out all segments according to the numbered overview to keep track, especially for small pieces.
- Some segments need to be glued. Please do not use tape, as the block will be pressed multiple times.
- Some segments consist of a single piece of fabric without seams. You can fix these with a fabric glue stick (wrong sides together) or with pins.
- Sew all segments according to the instructions. Remember: remove paper from seam allowances and press often, flat and precise.
