Q-matic Quilt Along: Introduction
Are you ready for a new quilting adventure? Then you’re in the right place! I have designed a brand new quilt pattern for a Q-Matic Quilt Along. Over the next few months, we are going to dive in and learn so much about the Q-Matic system for the BERNINA longarm.
Today I will share with you the schedule, a material list, and talk you through what we will be doing and learning during this quilt along. I am so excited for this!
Q-Matic Quilt Along
A Quilt Along with the Q-Matic. What are we going to do? And who is this for?
We are going to sew a fairly simple quilt top. Solid fabrics will work perfectly, since they will show the quilting really well. This quilt top will then be our base for the quilt along.
During the quilt along, we will quilt the quilt row by row using the BERNINA Q-Matic. With every row, I will share different functions of the Q-Matic. So with every row, you will build upon your skills and learn new things about the Q-Matic.
Quilting without the Q-Matic
If you own a BERNINA longarm + Q-matic, you can join in and quilt along following all the instructions in upcoming blog posts.
If you don’t own a Q-Mmatic, you are still more than welcome to join in! You can quilt along on your normal sewing machine or on a BERNINA Sit-Down model. I will be giving instructions for quilting this quilt with the BERNINA Q 16 and quilting rulers on the BERNINA blog.
Schedule
This blog post is the introduction to the Q-matic Quilt Along. In the list below, you will find the dates and topics of all the blog posts that will be published over the next few months.
- Aug 4: Sewing the quilt top (rows 1, 2 and 3)
- Aug 18: Sewing the quilt top continued (rows 4, 5 and 6)
- Sep 1: Quilting row 1: excluding an area
- Sep 15: Quilting row 2: shift the repeats in the design
- Sep 29: Quilting row 3: shift and copy the design, linking design pieces
- Oct 13: Quilting row 4: reflecting the design
- Oct 27: Quilting row 5: practice with lining up the design
- Nov 10: Quilting row 6: combination of above skills
- Nov 17: Round up, making a binding, and a label
Materials
For the quilt, you will need 6 different solids. I used the following amount of fabric.
- 15″ x WOF Kona Kumquat
- 20″ x WOF Kona Sunny
- 20″ x WOF Kona Chartreuse
- 20″ x WOF Benartex Solids Kelly Green
- 20″ x WOF Kona Emerald
- 20″ x WOF Kona Azure
You will need about 18 inch x WOF extra of the fabric that you will use for your binding. I think Kona Sunny works really well for a binding on this quilt.

What Are We Going to Do?
So, what will we be doing and learning during the QAL?
First, we start with sewing the quilt top. We will sew six rows using foundation paper piecing, regular piecing, and quarter circles. For this QAL the quilt top is our canvas, so we are keeping the piecing simple.
The Quilting
The Q-Matic Quilt Along is all about the quilting. For each row, I designed a Q-Matic file. During the QAL we will start with the basics. You will learn how to download and import the files to your Q-Matic.
For each row, we will try new functions of the Q-Matic. I will describe everything step by step here on the blog.
Here are some of the things we will learn:
- Scaling a pattern
- Repeat a pattern and move it around
- Exclude areas from a pattern
- Lining up a pattern with your quilt top design
- Reflecting a pattern
Every row will build on the skills you learned in the row before. We will start easy and make every row a little bit more challenging.
