Stitching the Southwest, Part Six: Cowboy Boots
Welcome to Stitching the Southwest! This week, we’re sewing one of my favorite blocks: the cowboy boots. And what could be more iconic for the Southwest than a beautiful pair of cowboy boots?
Anyone who loves cowboy boots owns more than one pair, right? That’s why our quilt definitely needs at least two pairs, and a pillow is an absolute must as well. But I’ve got a few more ideas for you, too.
“Good boots take you good places.” – unknown
Let’s get started!

Perfect for Creative Fabric Play
This block is just made for playing with fabrics. You can go classic:
- with leather-look fabrics
- or in warm browns and rusty tones
Or take the creative route (I know you love that!):
- with floral prints for a feminine Western look
- with bold colors for a modern twist
- or even scrappy for extra character
My tip: A small contrast fabric for the heel or toe really brings the block to life!

Stitching the Southwest, Your Quilt Keeps Growing
With each block, your Southwest Trails quilt becomes more vibrant. The cowboy boots fit perfectly with the previous motifs and add movement and personality to the overall design.

Here’s the context:
We are sewing a quilt together using FPP (Foundation Paper Piecing), inspired by the Southwest, its music, landscapes, and traditional patterns. New block tutorials are released regularly on the WeAllSew blog, and today we’re adding another motif to the series.
Blocks already released:
- Desert Peaks
- The Cowboy Hat
- Canyon Tides
- Guitar
- Horseshoe
And remember, one of the most important rules while sewing is: stay relaxed!
If you’d like to enter the final giveaway, make sure to share a photo of your finished quilt top on Instagram using #SouthwestQAL or in the WeAllSew Community Section by May 10, 2026. You can find all the important details in my first Quilt Along post here.

How to Sew the Cowboy Boot
Fabrics for Large Boot
Here is my fabric selection for the large boot (16″ x 16″) in the top right of the quilt:
- Sparkler Beach (background)
- Dapple Dot Raisin (sole and hook)
- Cinnamon (boot foot)
- Cheddar (highlights)
- Dapple Dot Canyon Rose (shaft)
- Sparkler Bear Lake (top edge)
FPP Sewing Instructions
- Print only the pattern segments you actually need (all pieces labeled with letters and numbers).
- Lay out all segments according to the numbered overview. This helps you stay organized, especially with smaller pieces.
- Some segments need to be glued (see photos above). As mentioned before, please use a glue stick, not tape (it will stick to your iron!).
- Some segments consist of a single fabric piece without seams. You can fix these in place using a fabric glue pen (wrong sides together) or pins.
- Sew all segments according to the instructions. Remember: remove paper from seam allowances and press frequently, flat and precisely.
Fabric for Small Boot
Here is my fabric selection for the smaller boot (right side of the quilt):
- Sparkler Beach (background)
- Dapple Dot Raisin (sole and hook)
- Cinnamon (boot foot)
- Cheddar (highlights)
- Sparkler Mediterranean (shaft)
- Sparkler Bear Lake (top edge)
And just like that, your little boots are finished. That wasn’t so hard, right?
