How to Make a Quilted Sunglasses Case
I recently made a bunch of quilted fabric to turn into zipper pouches for a fundraiser, but I had some smaller segments leftover that I didn’t want to throw away. I also had some fun sunglasses that I got on a recent trip to Tokyo that didn’t fit in any of the sunglass cases I had, so I decided to use some of those scraps to turn them into a useful sunglasses case. Follow along to learn how to make your own!
Materials to Make a Quilted Sunglass Case
- One 10” x 10” square of quilted fabric
- One 10” x 10” square of microfiber (You can use fleece, felt, or another soft fabric as well. I like microfiber because it almost acts as a self-cleaner when the sunglasses go in and out of the case.)
- One 2” x 10” strip of fabric (I just used some leftover binding cut at 2.25″ x a little over 10″ – the perfect use for some extra binding strips)
*Note: If you are using scrap fabric, you can totally replace the above with two pieces of 5” or 5 ½” by 10” pieces. Instead of folding the fabric in half when assembling, you’ll simply sew down both sides of the case, rather than just one. This size sunglasses case also holds some larger sunglasses, so you can scale it down if needed for smaller sunglasses.
This project comes together extremely quickly once you have your quilted fabric. And it would even work without quilted fabric if you want to whip something up quickly for a gift. I personally like using microfiber for the lining of this sunglasses case because it serves a dual purpose: to pad the case a bit more and help keep the glasses clean.
Instructions
To start, cut out a 10” x 10” square of quilted fabric and another 10” x 10” square of microfiber for the lining. If you don’t have microfiber, you could use wool or felt. My quilted fabric for this project was pre-cut into a 10″ square, so I just needed to trim my microfiber cloth that was a tad larger.
Next, take your 2” x 10” strip of fabric and create double fold binding with it by ironing it in half the long way and then ironing it again with the raw edges on the inside.
Layer the quilted fabric on top of the microfiber and clip the double fold binding to the top of the fabric and microfiber.
Sew the binding to the quilted fabric and microfiber to attach the binding at the top. If your double fold binding is longer than the fabric and microfiber, now is the time to trim any excess off.
Fold the fabric in half with the right sides facing each other and clip the sides and bottom to prepare for sewing.
Sew along the side and bottom of the case, leaving the top (where the binding is) open. Backstitch a bit at the start and stop to reinforce your stitches.
Trim the bottom corners to reduce bulk once you turn the case right side out.
Turn the case right side out and enjoy! You might need to use a chopstick or a turning tool to poke at the corners to give the case its final shape.
