Between the Lines Quilt Along: Part 7, 8 & 9

And just like that, we come to the end of the Between the Lines QAL. Today, I’ll share the final three rows of the quilt along with you.

New here? Do you want to get started with the quilt? Check out the first and second post for rows 1-6.

During the quilt along, we cover different quilting techniques like Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) on freezer paper and tea bag paper, traditional piecing, strip piecing and sewing quarter circles.

The QAL is hosted on the BERNINA International blog. I update you here on the WeAllSew blog after every three rows.

Join the QAL!

Would you like to join in? You sure can! You can find an overview of the quilt along here. There, you’ll find the links to the blog post (which includes the patterns and written instructions) and to the recordings of the live video instructions that I give for every row.

Would you like a kit with all the materials you need for this quilt? There are a few kits left in the Sugaridoo webshop. You can order a Rainbow kit or a Blue-Green kit.

Part 5: Row 1 Zig Zag Stack

Today, we’ll be working with foundation paper piecing (FPP) on tea bag paper. We also used this technique for Row 6, When the Stars Align.

If you prefer a different FPP technique, feel free to use it. The final result will look the same whether you use freezer paper, tea bag paper, or regular printer paper.

I personally choose tea bag paper for this row because I can draw a long strip on it. This way, I can make an entire row only three pieces of tea bag paper.

Pattern & Instructions

There are written instructions available for this row. There is also an instruction video for row 1, Zig Zag Stack.

Fabrics

For row 1, you will need the following fabrics. These are all included in the rainbow fabric kit. But, of course, you can make the quilt in a completely different colorway. Find the specific quantities for the fabrics over here.

  • Medium pink robots
  • Light pink robots
  • Dark pink triangles
  • Dark gray
  • White background

Part 8: Row 2 Roundabout

For this row, we’re working with curved shapes again. We already practised this with row 7.

The quarter circles in this row are slightly smaller, making them a bit more challenging. Each block contains three quarter circles measuring 3 inches and one smaller one measuring 2 1/4 inches.

If you find the smaller one too tricky to sew, you can opt to make all four quarter circles the larger size.

Part 9: Row 4 Flower Power

For the final row of the Between the Lines QAL, we’ll work on Foundation Paper Piecing again, using tea bag paper or regular paper.

In this blog post from our first Sugaridoo x Bernina QAL, I explain the step-by-step method of sewing with tea bag paper. Although we used a different pattern there, the technique is the same.

In the live video, I’ll demonstrate the steps for Row 4: Flower Power, for the Between the Lines QAL.

Of course, you can also use freezer paper if you prefer that method. Personally, I found it convenient to sew directly on paper for this block. It makes it easier to join the triangular sections into a block.
