Lavender and Flax Allergy Relief Pillow
Spring and summer in the garden are some of my favorite times of year. There is something so grounding about getting your hands in the soil, tending flowers, and watching all of my freckles make their yearly appearance. But if you are someone who deals with seasonal allergies, you know the tradeoff that often comes with that joy.
Watery eyes. A little puffiness. That unmistakable feeling that your sinuses have decided to throw a party without asking your permission.
While hiding indoors might sound tempting, it is not exactly practical when the garden is calling. Instead, I like to have a small moment of relief waiting for me when I come back inside.
Enter the Lavender & Flax Allergy Pillow.
After a morning spent outdoors, placing a chilled pillow over your eyes can feel like you have been whisked away to a quiet spa retreat. The weight of flax seeds rests comfortably across your eyes, while the scent of lavender helps create a moment of relaxation (or 5 moments if the little ones are distracted).
Even better, this is a quick and beginner-friendly sewing project that uses only small pieces of fabric and a few simple supplies.
Why Flax and Lavender?
This pillow is filled with a combination of flax seeds and dried lavender buds.
Flax seeds are perfect for projects like this because they create a soft, flexible weight that molds comfortably to your face. When chilled, they hold that cool temperature just long enough to soothe tired or irritated eyes.
Lavender adds a subtle, calming scent that turns a simple eye pillow into a small act of self-care.
Together, they make the perfect pairing for an allergy relief pillow.
A Simple Two-Part Design
One of my favorite parts of this project is that the pillow is made in two pieces:
- A filled interior pillow that holds the flax seeds and lavender
- A removable quilted sleeve
The interior pillow is quick to sew and gets filled before being stitched closed. The outer sleeve can be quilted however you like, which makes it a fun opportunity to practice decorative stitching or try out different quilting designs.
For quilting the sleeve, I recommend using the BERNINA Three-Sole Walking Foot with Seam Guide #50, which helps everything glide smoothly as you sew.
Fabric Ideas
This project is a great way to use favorite scraps or leftover FQs from the last project you worked on.
The pillow in my sample uses fabric from the Gulf Breeze collection by Becca Plymale for Art Gallery Fabrics, which has a light and airy feel that fits this relaxing project perfectly.
Florals, soft pastels, and nature-inspired prints all work beautifully for this project.
The Best Part: Instant Cooling Relief
Once your pillow is finished, simply slide the filled insert into the quilted sleeve and place it in the freezer. I have mine in a ziplock bag to keep them from absorbing any food smells.
The next time your eyes need a little extra comfort, you will have a chilled pillow ready to go.
Place it across your eyes, lean back for a few minutes, and enjoy the gentle weight and cool relief. After a long day outdoors, it feels like your own tiny spa moment right at home. (I mean, who doesn’t want a little spa moment in their day?!)
A Thoughtful Handmade Gift
These pillows also make wonderful gifts. They are quick to sew and thoughtful to receive.
Consider making a few for:
- Gardening friends
- Teachers
- Quilting friends at retreat
- Anyone who deserves a little extra relaxation
