Greek Key Quilt-Along, Week 1: Fabric Requirements and Cutting Instructions
Hi there! Lee here again from Freshly Pieced. I’m back with a fun, easy, and striking quilt design that we’re going to sew together over the next three weeks—my Greek Key quilt! Sound fun? (And no, there’s no paper-piecing in this one, although I’m glad you all loved my paper-piecing-made-easy post a few weeks ago!)
And it really is easy, I promise. If you’ve ever made a log cabin block, this quilt will be a piece of cake. If you haven’t made a log cabin block, well, this quilt will still be a piece of cake, and it’s the perfect way to learn about that design! I’ve added some strip piecing into the mix to make it even easier and quicker. Once the quilt top is sewn together, we’ll finish it off with some crosshatch straight-line quilting to really bring out the geometric feel of the design.
Finished Quilt Size – 62″ x 82″
Ready to get started? : ) Here’s the schedule:
Week 1 – Fabric requirements and cutting
Week 2 – Making the blocks
Week 3 – Assemble the top, baste and quilt
Materials to create a Greek Key Quilt:
White solid (I used Kona White) – 2-1/2 yards
Dark gray solid (I used Kona Steel) – 3 yards
Yellow solid (I used Kona Wasabi) – 1/3 yard
Binding (I used Kona Steel again) – 5/8 yard
Backing fabric – 5 yards
Cutting List:
From the white solid, cut:
(3) strips 4-1/2″ x Width of Fabric
(27) strips 2-1/2″ x Width of Fabric
Set aside (3) of the 2-1/2″ x Width of Fabric white strips. From the remaining (24) 2-1/2″ x Width of Fabric white strips, cut the following:
(9) strips 2-1/2″ x 18-1/2″
(48) pieces 2-1/2″ x 8-1/2″
(44) pieces 2-1/2″ x 6-1/2″
From the gray solid, cut:
(16) strips 2-1/2″ x 82-1/2″
(3) strips 4-1/2″ x Width of Fabric
(1) piece 4-1/2″ x 11″
Set aside (2) of the 2-1/2″ x 82-1/2″ gray strips. From the remaining (14) 2-1/2″ x 82-1/2″ gray strips, cut the following:
(5) strips 2-1/2″ x 58-1/2″
(3) strips 2-1/2″ x 40″
(10) strips 2-1/2″ x 18-1/2″
(1) piece 2-1/2″ x 11″
(20) pieces 2-1/2″ x 8-1/2″
(48) pieces 2-1/2″ x 6-1/2″
From the yellow solid, cut:
(1) piece 4-1/2″ x 11″
(1) piece 2-1/2″ x 18-1/2″
(1) piece 2-1/2″ x 11″
(4) pieces 2-1/2″ x 8-1/2″
(4) pieces 2-1/2″ x 6-1/2″

PS–to maxima from my previous reply. I spoke without thinking, I am a MAC person so I don’t know about other PC’s but all I did was go to File, then Print, and Save as PDF. It worked fine and then I printed it. Good luck.

Maybe you can answer this question for me…. I have a TON of jelly rolls that I would like to use, would this work for the white strips? Thank you!

Not to sound negative, but I don’t understand why am supposed to cut fabric 4-1/2″ when I see nothing but 2-1/2″ strips in the picture.

I thought border, but she has a solid dark one featured. Not sure I see any other reason for it myself. Anxious to hear her response also.

Hi all! You cut 4-1/2″ strips because some of the blocks are strip-pieced—you sew them together in long strips and then cross-cut to make the blocks. If you look at today’s post about making the blocks, it will all make sense! Let me know if you have further questions! : )

Love this quilt, n the yellow fabric will be a most when I decide to make it (love the color, love the name). My question is regarding the grey strips, 2.5″ x 82.5″. Are we cutting strips 2.5″ from salvage to salvage and butting them to make them 82.5″? Or are we supposed to cut lengthwise? Or Kona is extra wide fabric? I have to apologize in advance but the fabric that I usually buy is 44″ or 60″. I have never bought xtra wide. Thanks

Hi there – No, this does not use extra-wide fabric. If you have a continuous cut of three yards of the gray fabric, you should be able to cut your strips length-wise. This is standard procedure for quilts with borders. : )

Before I go ahead and purchase material for this project, has anyone had any answers to the cutting queries posted above? I don’t want to start this project if the instructions are wrong. i’m a newbie quilter so need my instructions spot on as i’m not experienced enough to work out the correct measurements should there be any errors. Thanks.

Hi there – Sorry for the late reply on this, I’ve been out of town! The 4-1/2″ strips are due to the fact that you’re strip-piecing the blocks. I think if you look at today’s post about making the blocks, it will all make sense. Thanks for your patience!

I think if you look at the above pic with the rolled up quilt on the chair. It looks like the strip is wider than 2 and a half. Otherwise I’d wait to cut .

I love your choice of backing fabric, can you share the brand and name so I can search it?

I like this pattern very much. It will make a great “male” quilt.
I sure wish there was a .pdf to download instead of copying and pasting. YEP I’m lazy. LOL Thank you anyway.
