Cosplay Ready: bernette 79 Yaya Han Edition Presser Foot Set

Hi, everyone! It’s Dessi-Desu and I’m excited to share with you all one of the many exciting things about the bernette 79 Yaya Han Edition, the presser feet set included with this machine. Whether you sew cosplay costumes or garments for daily wear, this presser foot set covers a wide array of garment sewing applications. There are several other feet included with the machine, but I will be specifically talking about the ones contained within this set. Each are also available for individual purchase, but be sure to check that the foot is compatible with your bernette machine.

Invisible Zipper Foot

First up in the presser foot set, we have the Invisible Zipper Foot. For me personally, most of my cosplay projects are gowns or dresses. If I am installing a zipper it’s most of the time an invisible zipper. When I saw that an Invisible Zipper Foot was actually included with the b79 Yaya Han edition, I was ecstatic because this is the first time I have not had to purchase an Invisible Zipper Foot separately. So what makes an Invisible Zipper Foot so helpful? The invisible zipper foot has grooves on the underside of the foot for the invisible zipper coil to run cleanly through as it is sewn. This ensures that the stitching is done closely to the zipper coil, so that it can properly zip and the zipper is cleanly hidden in your seam.

Hemmer Foot

The Hemmer Foot is used to create clean seams using a rolled hem. The spiral guide on this foot is for folding the fabric over twice as it is sewn with a straight stitch. While sewing, slightly fold the fabric and hold the fabric to the left while guiding it through the foot. The results are an effortless even rolled hem.

Zigzag Foot with Non-Stick Sole

If you are a cosplayer, chances are you are likely to work with some unusual fabrics at some point. Vinyls and leather will stick to your metal zigzag foot. This is where the Zigzag Foot with Non-Stick Sole is a must. If you have ever fed vinyl or leather through a machine not using a non-stick sole, not only is it difficult to sew, but it also impacts the stitch quality because the fabric does not move properly beneath the foot. The Zigzag Foot with Non-Stick Sole creates a smooth sewing experience for your difficult-to-feed materials, with clean stitching results.

Open Embroidery Foot

Next, we have our Open Embroidery Foot. This presser foot is ideal for applique details with its open view in the front. With the Open Embroidery Foot’s clear view, you are able to more easily see where you are stitching. One of the things I was most impressed by with this foot is the ease in which it goes around curves, as shown on my crescent moon example. I will definitely be using this foot for any satin stitch or decorative stitch details on my own projects going forward.

Gathering Foot

The Gathering Foot does exactly as its name says. With the Gathering Foot, you can create a gathered effect on light to medium-weight fabrics. To create a gathered look using the Gathering Foot, you will need to adjust your stitch length and tension to get the desired look for your gathers. Increasing your stitch length and tension will increase the density of your gathers. The weight of your fabric will also impact the look. Be sure to do a test before sewing your final fabric to make sure you are happy with your settings.

This presser foot can also be used to stitch gathered fabric to a base fabric. With your base fabric on top fed through the slot in the foot and fabric that will be gathered below the foot, stitch your fabric pieces together. Make sure you are checking that your fabric edges line up as you stitch. Now gathering and attaching your fabric pieces can be done in one single step! For cosplayers, this presser foot gives historic or magical girl vibes with its adorable gathering effect.

Universal Presser Foot Holder

The next presser feet require the use of the Universal Presser Foot Holder. To attach your Universal Presser Foot Holder, raise the needle and presser foot and then deactivate the dual feed. Turn the machine off to remove the presser foot and unscrew the presser foot holder. The Universal Presser Foot Holder can then be attached and secured in place with the screw. The presser feet that require the use of the Universal Presser Foot Holder can be simply snapped on in place.

Edgestitch Foot

The Edgestitch Foot is used for when you need a presser foot to run parallel along an edge. The guide built into the foot allows for the edges of your project to run evenly through the foot. The results are clean stitching along the edges of your project.

This foot is also great for applications such as topstitching, sewing on lace or binding, and stitching in the ditch. Here I used the guide on the Edge Stitch Foot to create even stitching on both sides of this seam.

Adjustable Binder Attachment

Edges trimmed with bias tape show up so frequently in character design. This is where the Adjustable Binder Attachment comes into play for your cosplay projects. Using pre-folded bias tape, place the bias tape through the foot and adjust the knob on the guide to the width of your bias tape. The guide within the foot will move to the measurement markings on the tape guide based on the movement of the knob. Afterward, check your needle position and adjust as needed. If the needle placement options do not work, this can be fixed using the screw at the top of the foot to adjust the position of the tape guide.

Your fabric edge can then be placed between the two bias tape halves. Afterward, the bias tape can be stitched to your fabric. No pinning is required!

Ribbon-Couching Foot

Want to add some embellishment to your project? The Ribbon-Couching Foot can sew ribbon and sequin strands up to 6mm wide. Loosen the screw on the presser foot guide to adjust the guide to the width of your ribbon or sequin strand. Afterward, the screw on the guide can be tightened. Your ribbon or sequin strand is fed through the opening of the foot as shown.

If you are stitching sequins, be sure that they are facing toward you. Otherwise, the sequin strands will catch on the foot and not be sewn properly. Using a zigzag stitch and invisible thread, I used this foot for sequin embellishment on my Sailor Cosmos cosplay.

That completes the specially selected presser feet included in the bernette 79 Yaya Han edition presser-foot set. Is there one in particular you are excited to try for your garment or cosplay projects? To see what else I am up to, you can follow me on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.
