Handmade Felt Appliqué Pincushions
Hello friends,
It’s Minki of Minki’s Work Table. I had been given many nice Christmas gifts but there’s a particular gift that I can’t forget.
It is a mini felt teddy bear handmade for me by my high school friend for me. At the time neither one of us really knew anything about sewing. Her first teddy bear wasn’t perfect, it had uneven stitches and crooked neck. However I was so thrilled to get such a special gift, and I loved it so much because of the time she spent making on little bear just for me! I have kept her little felt bear in a special drawer for over twenty years, it has a magical power that drags me back to my high school days and makes me think about all the things that I left behind.
I hope you share something meaningful this Christmas rather than any product that we rush out and buy at the shops to exchange in a hurry.
Let’s get started!
Materials to Make a Handmade Felt Appliqué Pincushion
- 100% wool felt
- 3 1/2” square of linen
- 3 1/2” square of print fabric
- Variety colors of 12wt threads. I used Aurifil
- Fusible web such as Lite Steam-A-Seam 2
- Fiberfill stuffing
- 6” Leather string
- Sewing machine (I use a BERNINA 570 QE)
- Open embroidery foot #20/#20C/#20D
How to Sew a Handmade Felt Appliqué Pincushion
1.Trace a 1 1/2” circle on purple felt using a spool. Attach 2” square of fusible web on the back of felt. Lightly press and cut out the shape. Draw two leaf shape on different green felts using fabric pen and follow the same steps. Following the manufacturer’s instruction, fuse the cut out design on 3 1/2” square linen.
2.Set up your machine to sew. Use a size 90 needle, 12 wt cotton thread, and Open embroidery foot #20/#20C/#20D. I selected a decorative stitch that reminds me of a flower, it is stitch #711 in my B 570 QE. I increased the stitch width just a bit. Feel free to select any stitch you like, and try a test on a scrap of fabric to see if you like it.
Change the stitch length.
Stitch flower motif one at a time. Trim the excess thread and sew next flower spacing evenly.
Change to straight stitch and stitch length to 3.0.
Sew straight line as shown and change green thread if you desire. Sew multiple times to finish the stem.
Sew the print fabric and linen together. Check out my One-of-a-kind pincushion tutorial for the details.
I hope you enjoy making this cozy gift for someone special. You can create your own pattern using spools or coins and add different shape of leaves. My Wool Felt Pincushion pattern is also available to download here.

This project looks super fun to make and to receive. I’ve never used wool felt before in my sewing. But I marvel at the simplicity and elegance of your finished pin cushions. I’m thinking that I would certainly give it a try. The instructions and illustrations seem easy to follow. Having a small box to stage the various pincushions is also compelling. It would be hard to choose my favorite one. I wonder about placing them in a small basket? Thank you for the idea.

I too have used felt but never on my machine. Love working with it by hand. But I think that is going to be my next project with scraps of felt I have accumulated over time. I love the softness of wool felt and I also love the forgiveness of it. You can adjust it anyway you want and it always cooperates. Love these little pin cushions and have to make a ton. Thank you for these!!

These are absolutely adorable! I love the construction not being too complicated- letting the stitches do the work instead of lots of steps with iron-ons etc.
The thing I love about using wool flannel in appliqué is the warmth and texture it adds to a piece. -
I work with wool and wool felt quite often. Most of my wool stitching is done by hand but I do enjoy the consistency of the machine work. I have also incorporated my wool appliqué and cotton fabrics which I love.

I have used wool in projects in the past but I have never sewn it on using my machine — always did it be hand. I think I need to give this a try. Besides, my guild is having a pincushion swap at our Christmas Party this year and this project would work AND looks like fun! Thank you!!
