WOW! We’ve just reached 63,000 likes on our BERNINA USA Facebook fan page! We quickly reached our goal of 63,ooo, and as a way to say “Thank You!” to all who join us at Facebook to share your love of sewing and creating, we are hosting another special giveaway.

  • I shop at my local fabric store. I like the variety and the quality of the fabrics. And the local store has great teachers and classes. It’s also more convenient than traveling to get to the big chain fabric stores.

  • Like all true fabric hoarders, I buy my fabric everywhere I find it. Where ever I travel, I check out all of the fabric shops and quilt stores. I always seem to need an additional suitcase to bring home my fabric finds.

  • I like to shop at local quilt shop. It supports them and I usually see something inspiring. If they do not have what I’m looking for, I go to my favorite online resource.

  • Yes, absolutely yes, all of the above. But mainly independent shops. Plus thrift stores (scored 2 yards of gorgeous ultrasuede for a dollar a pound recently!) and am always open to handouts when friends are cleaning out their attics and stashes. You never know where a nice piece of fabric will turn up!

  • I shop at all the stores. Depending on what I am making and the sales of course

  • Independent quilt shops, but many of them! I still look for sales and work with my budget. The big boxes can cheapen the world’s fabrics, but my work is much to precious to me to spend there. Bless all the quilt shops!

  • I buy from both, and from yard sales. I will sometimes buy fabric online if I know the product well, I prefer to be able to feel the fabric before I buy it.

  • I generally buy fabric where ever I find something I like or need. I will go for an online shop or local shop really depends on need and of course price and coupons.

  • I buy fabric at the local quilt shop. Support of these independent stores is what keeps them in business. I will buy fabric at chain stores for “disposable” projects. Never bought online but I am getting interested in trying them.

  • I love a little independent shop about a half hour from my home. It’s run by a Mennonite lady who has hundreds of bolts, lots of ideas, is very patient and helpful, and always wears a smile. It’s common for folks to take their projects in to her when they’re done. She also has a classroom that’s always open and shows many different quilts and projects. The only down side is I must drive there myself, my husband won’t wait two hours for me to finish shopping….wonder why?

  • I shop anywhere that I can find interesting fabrics! I am fortunate to have two independent fabrics stores in my town and they have a wonderful selection of amazing fabrics! I also shop at JoAnn – especially now that I have once close to me! There are also some great online sites to shop. I have even found great fabrics at discount stores and thrift shops! I am always on the look out!!

  • If I am making a quilt, then I go to one of my local quilt shops since the quality of fabric is greater there than at a chain store. If I’m making anything else (costumes, home dec, clothes, etc.) then I’ll go to either Joann’s or Handcock Fabrics.

  • I shop wherever there is quality quilting fabric on sale. I am a newbie Quilts of Valor quilter. The more fabric I can by on a sale, the more quilts I can make to honor those who have served and sacrificed for our country. If money was no object, I would shop at Yoder’s Department Store in Shipshewana, Indiana for all my fabrics. They have a big selection of fabrics, accessories, and patterns and very knowledgeable and helpful staff.

  • I love the variety at the independent fabric stores, and spend a lot of dollars in them. I sometimes resort to a big box store if I can’t find what I’m looking for in the small stores. When travelling, I seek out independent fabric stores–I often find entirely different fabrics than what is offered locally.

  • I shop at independent stores for my fabric. I live in Alaska and know where all the quilt stores on the road system are located. There is only one I have not visited yet, in Valdez.

  • I shop for fabric at independent stores. They have the latest fabrics and patterns. I also check out quilting shops when I travel to different cities. That is so much fun!

  • I have bought fabric at all kinds of stores. Since there is no local fabric shop, and the nearest chain or big box store is 20 or miles away, most times I will order online with a chain. However, some of the best deals I have gotten are from estate sales or auctions.

  • I shop independent, local shops when possible. Otherwise I shop independent shop online. I really avoid chains. The quality and service you get from an independent shop is beyond compare….even online, you can get personal service! Early on in my quilt making I was burned by “large chain” stores. I NEVER shop that type of store. So, I have to save for the fabric I want and watch for sales.

  • I buy fabric whenever I see something I like…………AND I actually use it all!! SMILE I LOVE shopping at small local shops, but Fabric Depot in Portland is my absolute favorite!

  • For fabric….Independent quilt shops…..always! Like to give the business to the little shops! For thread and needles I will sometimes visit a chain store.

  • I shop at both independent fabric stores and chain stores, online and brick and mortar. It depends on which shop has what I want , the price and shipping time.

  • A little of it all – big box store for garment staples, independent chains and online stores for quilting and specialty shops for more garment sewing. 🙂

  • I shop both, but I prefer an independent store. Unfortunately, their prices are higher and the rarely have sales! Knowing their quality is better, they have to put prices higher. But being on a budget……….

  • I like to spread the wealth around! I shop at chain stores, bernina dealers, quilt shops. All have certain things I like and would be a shame if any of them had to close due to the economy.

  • Absolutely never ever at chains or big box stores ~ I’m a total fabric snob and will only buy and use quilt shop quality fabrics.

  • I shop at my local fabric store, and I always enjoy the visit, because everyone is helpful and interested in what I’m doing. But I can’t resist a good sale at JoAnn’s!

  • Living in a small community, JoAnn’s is the best chain store. I also shop at an independent quit store. Unfortunately, the last of 3 independent high quality fabric stores I frequented just closed. Although these stores were not local, I would make the trip.

  • I usually buy from Independents online but I will buy from big chains depending on what I’m looking for. I live out in the country so I make do with the internet.

  • For actual quilts I go to my favorite local quilt store. I believe the quality is better and they typically have fabric lines that coordinate already, and employees that help with the selection. For smaller projects, I may go to the chain stores first to see if they have anything that I like. If I have set my heart on a specific fabric line that is not available locally, I order online.

  • I love shopping for fabric wherever I can find it. I love supporting mom and pop shops so I try to support them as much as I can. However, I am obsessed with vintage fabrics so I’ve started going to more estate sales and buying off of eBay.

  • I mostly purchase from independent stores. I do a fair amount of online shopping as well. I seldom shop for fabric at larger chain stores. Thanks for another opportunity to win.

  • It try to give as much of my business to the independent quilt shops in our area. I’ve occasionally shopped online and sometimes I will make fabric purchases at the larger chain fabric stores. Quality, price and selection are big factors.

  • i love our little quilt shop for fabulous fabrics – and I love to support small local business, but I also hit the ‘big’ store quite frequently because it is open more hours, has a wider selection and meets my other crafting needs as well!

  • I love going to little independent quilt shops. They put so much effort into the business for their customers it is hard not to love them. My favorite is called Flamingo QuiltWorx, in Castlegar BC Canada. Debra is fabulous.

  • I buy fabric from anywhere I can find a deal. Chain stores, thrift stores, fabric stores, craft and hobby stores, yard sales, estate sales, online auctions, etc. Some of the nicest fabric I have came from yard sales and estate sales. I love fabric! Thanks!

  • I shop mostly on line since I live in a small town with only one tiny little quilt shop, so when I see fabric in a magazine or on line that I like, then I can order it on line.

  • My local quilt shop is my favorite place to shop for fabrics and quilt supplies. They have great classes and always make time to answer any questions I might have. They sold me my wonderful Bernina 780B and they service all types of machines. Great place to go!!

  • I prefer shopping at local quilt shops that are not chain stores owned by corporations. I am an independent business owner and I believe that is part of where economic stability comes from, independent businesses who can respond to market needs faster. I put my money where my mouth is by shopping with the independently owned businesses wherever and whenever I can.

  • I shop at many independent quilt shops, all over the State of Alaska…Seams like Home Quilt Shoppe, The Quilt Tree, The Quilted Raven & Quilt Zone, all in Anchorage. Then there are Just Sew in Palmer and Sylvia’s Quilt Depot in Wasilla. Head up the Parks Hwy to Healy and find Granma’s Quilt Shop, then on to Fairbanks to Northern Thread and The Material Girls, then take a jaunt down the Richardson Hwy to Delta Junction to The Calico Cow. I love to go south too, to find Sew’n Bee Cozy in Seward, Robin Place Fabric in Soldotna, then on to Kenai for Kenai Fabrics. Finally, I head down to Homer to The Sociable Quilt. I have driven to all of these, most of them, many times. I understand there is one in Valdez too! Awe, another road trip adventure to come.
