First Love Pillow from Fat Quarter Shop
Inspired by a classic design, we have this new First Love Pillow to share with you by Fat Quarter Shop. We love the look of diamonds, but piecing on point is not our favorite. So, we came up with a new piecing technique to create that look with straight rows. As a bonus, there is virtually no waste! It finishes at 17″ and makes a posh office accent.
Materials to Make a First Love Pillow
- Two 1/8 yards of light print fabric for pillow front
- Two 1/4 yards of dark print fabric for pillow front
- 1/4 yard fabric for binding
- 3/4 yard fabric for backing
- 20″ square of batting
- 20″ square of muslin
- Coordinating thread of your choice to piece and quilt (we used Aurifil Blush 50wt)
- One pillow form (we prefer the 18″ square for extra fullness)
We selected our four prints from the Yes, Please collection from Riley Blake Fabrics for the striking combo of black, white and rose gold metallic! It’s our favorite color lately. To let the rose gold shine, we quilted it minimally with straight lines. We selected a matching thread color and used our Patchwork foot #37 as a guide along our seams. Simple as that!
The simple quilting also serves to add a secondary effect of its own. See how it creates these beautiful mini four-patches! Use the quilting to create your desired effect. Add color pop with a complementary hue, give the look of handwork with longer, heavier stitches, or use a wavy serpentine stitch for flair!

Is it just me or is the tutorial missing? I’ve checked both Fat Quarter Shop and Jolly Jabber blog and can’t find it on either.
