Trellis Quilt

I just love to have a pretty quilt to put on my lap as I’m lounging at home, and this quilt is the perfect size for me (because I also like to have my feet uncovered).  I’m happy to share this pattern with you!  My quilt is made using my new fabric collection, “Longwood” (available on my website, CollageQuilter.com).  Of course, you can use any fabric you choose– you’ll just need 11 coordinating pieces (and preferably a couple stripes).  Here are the details you need for making this quilt:

Fabric Requirements

  • 1-½ yds. Brandywine in cream stripe (only 1/3 yard is required if you are not using a striped fabric)
  • 1-½ yds. Brandywine in green stripe (only 1/3 yard is required if you are not using a striped fabric)
  • ⅔ yard Flower Garden
  • ⅔ yard Peony
  • ⅓ yard Wilmington in cream
  • ¼ yard Dogwood
  • ¼ yard Dupont in blue
  • ¼ yard Dupont in green
  • ¼ yard Kennett Square
  • ¼ yard Wilmington in blue
  • ⅛ yard Pincushion in green

Cutting Instructions

  • From Brandywine in cream, cut 16 strips that are 8-½” x 2-½”, using whichever portion of the stripe you prefer.
  • From Brandywine in green, cut 16 strips that are 8-½” x 2-½”, using whichever portion of the stripe you prefer.
  • From Flower Garden, cut two 8-½” squares and one 12-⅝” square.  Cut the 12-⅝” square into quarter square triangles.
  • From Peony, cut two 8-½” squares and one 12-⅝” square.  Cut the 12-⅝” square into quarter square triangles.
  • From Wilmington in cream, cut 16 strips that are 8-½” x 2-½”.
  • From Dogwood, cut 32 squares that are 2-⅞”.
  • From Dupont in green, cut 32 squares that are 2-⅞”.
  • From Dupont in blue, cut twelve 2-½” squares and two 4” squares.  Cut the 4” squares into quarter square triangles.
  •  From Kennett Square, cut twelve 2-½” squares and two 4” squares.  Cut the 4” squares into quarter square triangles.
  • From Wilmington in blue, cut twelve 2-½” squares and two 4” squares.  Cut the 4” squares into quarter square triangles.
  • From Pincushion in green, cut twelve 2-½” squares and two 4” squares.  Cut the 4” squares into quarter square triangles.

Piecing Instructions

To make the half-square triangles, match up the Dupont in green fabric with the Dogwood fabric with right sides together.  As shown in the photo, mark the center of the square along the diagonal.  Sew the pieces together ¼” from the edge of the center line on both sides of the line.  Cut the half square triangles apart on the line.  Press open.

Using a ¼” seam, piece the blocks together as indicated in the illustration.  Be sure to nest the seams and press frequently.  Make two “Flower Garden” blocks, and two “Peony” blocks

Make two right side “Flower Garden” blocks and two left side “Flower Garden” blocks.  (Because this quilt is set “on-point”, it’s important that the edges of the quilt are NOT on the bias, but on the straight of grain.  This is the reason for cutting quarter-square triangles)

Make two top “Peony” blocks and two bottom “Peony” blocks, using the quarter square triangles (because the blocks are on-point, the straight of grain needs to be on the outside edges of the quilt)

Lay out the blocks on a design wall, then piece the strips together as indicated below.  Be certain to match seams.

  • Make a quilt sandwich with backing fabric, batting and the quilt top.  Ensure that the backing and batting extend 3”-4” past the edge of the quilt top.
  • Quilt as desired.  I did a “quilt in the ditch” pattern on the quilt using rulers, and free-motion “doodle-quilting” on the “Peony” and “Flower Garden” blocks.  This is a great size quilt for quilting on my Q 16, and it also gave me great practice with rulers and free-motion quilting!

Finish the Quilt

  • Trim the batting and backing fabric from the quilt, and square up the quilt by ensuring that the measurements are the same across the quilt in the middle and on the edges.  The corners should be at right angles.
  • Bind the quilt as desired.

I hope you enjoy making this quilt!  Please let me know if you have any questions.  ~Emily Taylor
