Get Happy!! Quilt and Pillow Tutorial

In my previous tutorial, you learned my favorite tips for foundation paper piecing a single Get Happy block. If you loved making it and want to sew more blocks, this tutorial will help you make tops for a pillow or lap quilt.

Get Happy Pillow and Lap Quilt

Materials to Make a Get Happy!! Pillow Top

This pillow top is made with four Get Happy!! blocks. The finished pillow size is 14″ tall by 28″ wide.

  • Four 5″ squares of foreground fabric
  • 3/4 yard of background fabric
  • Add-A-Quarter ruler
  • Seam roller (can be replaced with a Clover “Hera” marker)
  • Glue pen
  • Thread snips
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting mat
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine (I pieced this block on my BERNINA 570 QE)
  • Patchwork foot #37/#37D

Get Happy Quilt Step Twenty One: Finished!

Using a 1/4″ seam, sew the four blocks together along the long sides as shown below. Cut two pieces of background fabric at 3″ by 28″.

Get Happy Pillow Step 1Sew one piece of 3″ by 28″ background fabric to the top, and the second piece to the bottom, as shown below.

Get Happy Pillow Step 2Your pillow top is done! To finish this pillow, follow this wonderful tutorial on the WeAllSew blog. I used my BERNINA #50 walking foot to quilt straight lines and used my Bulky overlock foot #12C to add piping around the pillow. If you need help using your #12C foot to make piping, watch this video. This pillow is finished with a zipper that I attached using my Zipper foot #4.

Materials to Make a Get Happy!! Lap Quilt

This quilt top is made from 28 Get Happy blocks. The finished size is 64″ tall by 47 1/2″ wide.

  • 28 5″ squares of foreground fabric
  • 4 1/2 yards of background fabric
  • Add-A-Quarter ruler
  • Seam roller (can be replaced with a Clover “Hera” marker)
  • Glue pen
  • Thread snips
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting mat
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine (I pieced this block on my BERNINA 570 QE)

Cutting Instructions to Make a Get Happy!! Lap Quilt

Cut the following pieces out of the background fabric:

  • A = 9 1/2″ by 41 1/2″
  • B = 9 1/2″ by 34 3/4″
  • C = 9 1/2″ by 27 1/2″
  • D = 9 1/2″ by 20 1/2″
  • E = 9 1/2″ by 13 3/4″
  • F = 9 1/2″ by 7 1/4″

Instructions to Make a Get Happy!! Lap Quilt

Foundation paper piece 28 Get Happy blocks. Using a 1/4″ seam, make rows of Get Happy blocks and background fabric as shown below.

  • Sew 1 Get Happy block to background piece A
  • Sew 2 Get Happy blocks to background piece B
  • Sew 3 Get Happy blocks to background piece C
  • Sew 4 Get Happy blocks to background piece D
  • Sew 5 Get Happy blocks to background piece E
  • Sew 6 Get Happy blocks to background piece F
  • Sew 7 Get Happy blocks together to make the bottom row

Get Happy Lap Quilt Step 1

Using a 1/4″ seam, sew the rows together from top to bottom in the order shown below.

Your quilt top is complete and should look like this! Print out the Get Happy finished quilt coloring sheet below to plan out your quilt!

Congratulations! Your Get Happy quilt top is now finished! Pick 5 yards of a coordinating fabric for the back and half a yard for the binding. Next up, baste your Get Happy quilt top, batting, and backing following these instructions. I used my BERNINA Walking foot #50 to quilt diagonal straight lines.
