Thanksgiving Pillow Set, Part 2: Leaf Pillow

Hello fellow makers!

This is the second part of my Thanksgiving pillow project. Today, I will teach you how to make a simple and yet fun pillow cover using the Drop-Shaped Embroidery Foot #26, which is a free-motion presser foot that is ideal both for embroidering and executing free-motion sewing. In this tutorial, I decided to use it to trace a leaf using the free motion technique, using our Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids’ Apple Cider print to combine it with the triangle pillow made in my previous blog post.

Let’s get started!

Fabric Requirements

PE-512 3/4 yd

Cutting Instructions

Two (2) 18” x 18” squares.

Two (2) 16 1/2” x 10” rectangles (back of pillow).

Additional Material Needed to Make the Thanksgiving Leaf Pillow

One (1) 18” x 18” High Loft Quilting Batting
Coordinating quilting thread
Drop-Shaped Embroidery Foot #26
Leaf Template

Steps to Make the Thanksgiving Leaf Pillow

Step 1.

Place one 18” x 18” fabric square, one (1) 18” x 18” high loft quilting batting and one (1) 18” x 18” fabric square and sandwich them making sure the batting is in between both of the fabric squares.

Pin all three layers and place your leaf pattern on top, making sure it’s centered and trace with a water-soluble pen. Note that this batting is thicker so you will need to pin and quilt carefully.

Step 2.

Using your Drop-shaped Embroidery Foot #26 start tracing your leaf shape.

Step 3.

Trace the leaf shape two more times in order for the quilting to look more noticeable and have a nice look to it.

Step 4.

Trace your leaf veins and quilt.

Step 5.

Now, trim your pillow cover so it measures 16 1/2” x 16 1/2”. Take the back of the pillow rectangle pieces and follow the same instructions for the back of the pillow explained on my previous blog post. Change your foot for the Reverse Pattern Foot #1D in order to finish your pillow cover.
