Holiday Mug Rug
If you can’t get enough Christmas sewing projects, here’s another one for you. Today I’m going to show you how to make a quick project for the Holidays, a Mug Rug. It’s perfect to place your hot chocolate or afternoon tea and can be sewn together quickly in between your family gatherings. I decided to use Sharon Holland’s Spirited collection since the colors gave that Holiday vibe that everyone loves, combined with our AGF Pure Solids, Spruce, to add that green touch for the rug mug. Have fun making this project and hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays with family and friends!.

- Two (2) 1 3/4’’ x 6 1/2’’ strips from Fabric B
- One (1) 2’’ x 8’’ strip from Fabric B
- One (1) 5’’ x 4’’ rectangle from Fabric B
- Two (2) 1 1/2’’ x 1 1/2’’ square from Fabric B
- One (1) 1 1/2’’ x 2 1/2’’ rectangle from Fabric B
- Two (2) 4’’ x 2’’ rectangle from Fabric C
-
Two (2) 1 1/’2’’ x 1 1/2’’ square from Fabric D
-
One (1) 4’’ x 1 1/2’’ strip from Fabric D
- One (1) 14” x 12” rectangle of batting
Step One: Making your Flying Geese
Take one 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” rectangle from Fabric B and two 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” squares from Fabric D.
Take one square and mark on the diagonal with a water soluble pen and place on top of Fabric B.
Sew at the diagonal and then trim leaving 1/4” of a seam. Press your unit.
Repeat the same process on the other side in order to complete the flying geese.
Now, take the flying geese and two 1 1/2”x 1 1/2” squares from Fabric B and join one on each side of the flying geese at a 1/4” seam allowance. Set aside.
Take two 4” x 2” rectangles from Fabric C and one 4” x 1 1/2” strip from Fabric D and join them, placing Fabric D strip in the middle, at a 1/4” seam allowance.
Join both assembled pieces together, creating your gift box.
Join one 5” x 4” rectangle to the assembled unit right sides facing, at a 1/4” seam allowance.
Take one 2” x 8” rectangle from Fabric B and join it on the top part of the assembled unit.
Then, take two 1 3/4” x 6 1/2” strips from Fabric B and pair one on each side of the unit.
Finish your piece by joining two 1 1/2” x 9 1/2” strips from Fabric A on the top and bottom of the unit, right sides facing and at 1/4” seam allowance.
Press your unit. Take your batting piece and place it on the wrong side of your mug rug, pinning all around.
Quilt as desired. In my case, I wanted to do channel quilting, so I decided to trace my first lines so I could guide myself.
Using the Reverse pattern foot #1D I was able to make perfect stitch lines.
I decided to quilt at 1/4” seam allowance, so I moved my needle to -3.
Once you finish, your mug rug should look like this.
Now, place your backing fabric, right sides facing on top of the quilted unit. Pin, and sew all around at a 1/4” seam allowance, leaving about 3”-4” inches of opening to turn your piece inside out.
Turn your mug rug inside out and press. Pin your opening and hand stitch or machine stitch.
Now, relax and enjoy your hot chocolate with your beautiful mug rug!. Happy Holidays!

I really like the Rug Mugs and tried to down load it to my computer for future reference. However, I could not find a download button to use. I had to copy the written instructions, then copy each picture separately and insert it into the instructions.
Do you normally offer your patterns free but don’t offer a way to download them? Or am I that dumb that I don’t know how to download stuff like this?
I’d download more patterns and make more items if you could enlighten me. ead -
I have the same question. I don’t want to print it out because it will take a lot of ink.
