Adding Simple Texture to Quilts

With my BERNINA 590, I translate texture inspirations into clean, modern quilting by combining decorative stitches, texture, and color. On this quilt, I used three different quilting stitches, including the triple stitch, which gives the look of hand stitching while remaining strong and precise. The triple stitch repeats each stitch three times in the same spot, creating a textured, hand-sewn appearance that works beautifully for decorative quilting.

You can easily find the triple stitch on your BERNINA 590 in the stitch menu—look for the triple straight stitch icon or number (check your manual for your specific version). It’s perfect for adding texture, emphasizing shapes, or giving a hand-stitched feel to any design.

For stitching, I love using Aurifil 40wt thread. It glides easily through all quilt layers, giving beautiful definition and smooth results. The BERNINA Three-Sole Walking Foot with Seam Guide #50 helps feed all the layers evenly, keeping lines straight and stitches consistent — perfect for decorative or straight-line quilting.

To add extra dimension, I also incorporate simple hand embroidery and hand-tied wool yarn. These touches give the quilt warmth, personality, and a layered texture that complements the machine quilting.

Combining different stitches, thread, and small handwork is a simple way to add depth, movement, and a touch of personal story to any quilt — and your BERNINA makes it effortless to bring these ideas to life.
