Between the Lines Quilt Along: Part 1, 2 & 3
In June we started with the Between the Lines Quilt Along. A row-by-row quilt along where we sew a new row every four weeks.
During the quilt along we cover different quilting techniques like Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) on freezer paper and tea bag paper, traditional piecing, strip piecing and sewing quarter circles.
The QAL is hosted on the BERNINA International blog. I’ll update you here on the WeAllSew blog after every three rows.
Join the QAL!
Would you like to join in? You sure can! You can find an overview of the quilt along here. There you’ll find the links to the blog post (which includes the patterns and written instructions) and to the recordings of the live video instructions that I give for every row.
So far we have done rows 5, 9 and 6. We sew the rows with increasing difficulty.
Would you like a kit with all the materials you need for this quilt? There are a few kits left in the Sugaridoo webshop. You can order a Rainbow kit or a Blue-Green kit.
Part 1: Row 5 Rush Hour
For the first part of the QAL we are making row 5, Rush Hour. The yellow figures reminded me a bit of a traffic jam seen from above, hence Rush Hour. Although our row in the quilt is, of course, much more colorful and cheerful than a traffic jam of cars.
Pattern and Instructions
There are written instructions available for this row. There is also an instruction video for row 5, Rush Hour.
I will describe the row we are making in two ways. The basic version, where all the figures are the same size.
And an improv version, where we play with length and add random little strips.
Fabrics
For row 5 you will need the following fabrics. These are all included in the rainbow fabric kit. But of course, you can make the quilt in a completely different colorway. Find the specific quantities for the fabrics over here.
- Yellow with triangles
- Yellow with squares
- Gray (accent)
- White with robots (background)
Part 2: Row 9 Into the Mountains
For the second part of the quilt along we were making stacked light teal triangles. In some way they made me think of mountains. So that’s what it’s called, for the second part of the QAL we are making row 9. A Foundation Paper Pieced pattern of triangles and diamonds.
Pattern and Instructions
There are written instructions and an FPP pattern available for this row. There is also a replay of the live video for row 9, Into the Mountains.
Fabrics
For row 9 you will need the following fabrics. These fabrics are part of the QAL kit, find the specific quantities for the quilt over here.
- Light teal with round robots
- Medium teal with squares
- Gray (accent)
- White with robots (background)
BONUS Into the Mountains Pillow
For the second part of the QAL, I had a little surprise planned. A bonus pattern to go with Row 9, Into the Mountains.
This pillow is a super fun small project. If you’d like to join the QAL, but don’t want to make the complete quilt, this is for you! I will be sharing two more bonus projects during the QAL.
Pattern and Instructions
There are written instructions available for this row. There is no instruction video for the pillow since the technique is the same as that from row 9.

Part 3 – Row 6 When the Stars Align
For the third part of the Between the Lines QAL we will be working on another FPP row, When the Stars Align.
Pattern and Instructions
There are written instructions and a FPP pattern available for this row. There is also a replay of the live video for row 6, When the Stars Align.

For row 5 you will need the following fabrics. These fabrics are part of the QAL kit, find the specific quantities for the quilt over here.

With this row, we will focus on how FPP patterns work mirrored. As you can see in the image below, a mistake is easily made with FPP.
Between the Lines on the Qmatic
This row-by-row quilt is perfect to quilt on a long arm. I’m already thinking about designs for the Qmatic to help me quilt the quilt.
When the quilt top is finished I’ll be sharing the Qmatic patterns with you here on the We All Sew blog. You can download these patterns to use on your Qmatic, or send them to your longarmer to quilt your quilt for you.
Next up in the Between the Lines QAL
Every four weeks we will be sewing a new row together. Here are the dates for the upcoming three rows:

September 26th Pattern 5/9 + halfway giveaway (live video on Sept 27)
