Elegant and Comfortable Loungewear Sewing Ideas

Loungewear is my favorite! It combines the elegance of lingerie with the comfort and versatility of everyday wear. Think smooth fabrics, fun and elegant colors, and styles that are easy to make in an evening.

In the video tutorial below, learn how to create an elegant lace and tulle gown. The best fabrics to enjoy a fun lounge set are bamboo jersey for a cozy knit and tricot for a smooth gown dotted with elegant lace. With the right fabrics, you can create beautiful, comfortable loungewear that feels as luxurious as it looks.

Start with a Bra Pattern: The Base for Your Loungewear

This gown has started with a bra pattern…like most of my camis and gowns. I’ve even made a dress beginning with a bra pattern, added a skirt and back zip, and done! Party time.

The pattern used in this tutorial is the Lotus Wireless Bra from LilypaDesigns. To learn more about how to make this bra, check out my tutorial here.

Fabric Needed

  • Tricot Fabric – 1.5y & Tulle Lace – 1.5y for Cups (available at BraBuilders.com)

A gown can be made with a stretch or non-stretch fabric, so Tricot is a good choice. The lace used to design this garment is a tulle lace “Blue Smoke,” a deep navy with an embroidered edge and just enough sparkle to show a little elegance.

Draping the Lace Bra Cup

I happen to have a dress form made from my measurements, so draping comes easily and gives me a good look at how my garment will turn out, especially when I’m draping a bra cup. That’s where I started, since I needed to see how the cup would look once sewn, and it didn’t disappoint. The lace showed off!

Designing the Cups

Feel free to design your cups however you like, whether using non-stretch tulle or a stretch lace. Cut out and tricot (base fabric) in the cup pieces, then design lace placement and sew all pieces together based on your pattern guidance. After stitching the cup pieces together, pressing the seams was necessary, as the tulle needed smoothing at the seams.

Here I used a picot elastic, traditional in bra making, and stitched it from one side continuously to the other side/top of the cup using a 3-step zigzag stitch.

After the first stitch, turn for 2nd stitch the elastic down on the inside of the gown.

Consider stitching the straps in the front and pinning for placement and fit in the back to try on your new garment…Enjoy!

Thanks for the love!
