Onyx in Autumn Table Runner Pattern

Good Morning!  My name is Jessica Dayon and I’m so happy to be here today to share a free table runner pattern with you! I have been working on a really fun table runner series to share with you on WeAllSew and today I am sharing the first table runner pattern in this series.

Up until earlier this year, I never made a table runner!  Can you believe that? I’ve always focused on big quilts and love making them.  However, at the beginning of this past summer, I made 2 table runners and rotated them all summer long.  Seeing them on my table daily brought me so much joy!  Now that autumn is upon us here, in the Northern Hemisphere, I decided I needed to make an autumnal table runner to enjoy.  I came up with the design I’m sharing today- Onyx in Autumn Table Runner.

The main technique used in this runner is stitch and flip corners. If you aren’t familiar with that method, here is what I do.

Stitch and Flip Corner Tutorial

First, gather the pieces you need to make the portion of the block you are working on. I am going to make one of the pumpkins.

Lay the top piece on top of the bottom piece, right sides together.

Then you sew from one corner to the other, in a diagonal line. If desired, you can draw the line with a pencil using a mechanical pencil and ruler before you sew.  After that, you can sew on the pencil line.

After you sew, trim 1/4″ away from the seam line.

Flip the corner open. Finger press or press with an iron.

I use the easy corner triangle method to make each of the corners on the pumpkins and top of the stems.

When I sew easy corner triangles, I love to use BERNINA foot #34D.

When the easy corner triangles for the first pumpkin and stem are completed, sew the pumpkin together as shown in the photo in the pattern.

When I need to sew a 1/4″ seam, my favorite BERNINA foot to use is #57D.

Continue following the pattern to make the remaining pumpkins, kitty, leaves, and border.

Quilting the Runner

After the top is together, it’s time to quilt it! I’m using my Q 24 with Q-matic to quilt this runner.

After I loaded the quilt on the frame, I designed on a pantograph to use.  I chose Ginger Snap by Apricot Moon Designs.

The Q-matic and Q 24 went to work stitching out the design!  I love watching it stitch out!

I am so happy with how it turned out!  The pantograph stitched out beautifully.
