Overlocker Tips, Techniques and Tutorials
April is National Overlocker Month, and we’re sharing some of our top tips, techniques, and tutorials to help you sharpen your skills! Plus, we have our National Overlocker Month giveaway waiting for you at the end of this post, so be sure to read all the way through and get your entry in today!
Overlocker Tips and Techniques
Welcome to the world of overlockers! Maybe you have never worked with a serger before, or it could be that you just haven’t tried one in a long time. Either way, we are starting from square one and slowly walk through all the cool techniques your overlocker can do. With our Overlocker for Beginners series, you’ll be serging with confidence!
Keep your machine purring and in tip-top shape with our Top 10 Overlocker Mechanics’ Tips!
Do you dread to thread? Overlockers or sergers of all kinds have a reputation of being impossible to thread, but overcoming this dread of threading is key to your successful experience with these machines. Learn how to thread your machine today.
Check out our Top 10 Overlocker Needle Tips to help you create the perfect stitches!
As the old School House Rock song teaches us, 3 is a Magic Number, and this is a great way to think about the basic stitches on an overlocker machine. The three basic stitches are: overlock, flatlock, and rolled edge. Using three threads, we can easily adjust settings to achieve these three different stitches. Learn how it’s done on our Three Threads, Three Ways with a BERNINA Overlocker blog post. Then you can get creative with a whole bunch of different ways you can use them!
Showing your machines a little TLC is key to maintaining a trouble-free relationship. Just like your sewing machines, your overlocker needs some regular cleaning and oiling. Unlike your sewing machine, knowing when to do this varies more from person to person. You will learn quickly that an overlocker/serger creates much more lint than a sewing machine because with every stitch it is also cutting the fabric. Hello, dust bunnies! Find our top tips for Overlocker Care and Cleaning here at WeAllSew.

Three different garments will be sewn up using these patterns and just your L 890 Overlocker—no sewing machine needed!
Quilters often think they would have no way to use an overlocker/serger in their process, but see how it can make tidy and speedy work of the binding process with our Speedy Binding with an Overlocker tutorial.
Make a 5-minute mask on an overlocker/serger, all you need is two pieces of fabric and elastic with this tutorial.

I used to make all my girls clothes with my Bernina serger back in 1970’s and 1980’s. That wonderful serger has been a workhorse all these years but she is getting tired. So I would love to be working on a brand new overlocker to sew up clothes for my grandchildren.

-
I am completely intimidated, though eager to learn, starting from the beginning.
-
I’ve been making quilts almost exclusively for over 20 years! I’m ready to start learning something new and have been interested in sergers for the last couple of years! I was given one but it was broken & my Bernina tech said it wasn’t worth the cost of fixing! But I got my interest perked by the prospects! It just seems like it could be used for so many things!
-
I had a serger years ago that was nothing but trouble. I am so looking forward to my Bernina 890 overlock and coverstitch machine that is on order! I want to learn all the right places to use the various stitches, and am particularly interested in learning about different presser feet and their uses. I think this machine will be a game changer!
-
I’d like to learn more about using the flatlock function.
-
I have owned other brands of sergers/overlockers, but none seem to be the same as a Bernina! None seem to be the same quality as the way a Bernina does, so I want to have that beautiful look to my fabric whether it is serging/overlocking a pillow case, child’s dress or whatever I may be working on!!
-
I would love to have a new serger . Mine was over 30 years old and I cried every time I tried to use it and the thread would break. I tried to show my daughter how to use it but she was so frustrated that she just wouldn’t even try to use it. My sewing machine I bought new in 1999. So the new stuff is awesome you can do so much with the new machines.
thanks and good luck to everyone -

-
I have been using a ‘very’ old Serger for many years, and after watching some sewing shows and youtube videos,, I now realize that there is more to a Serger then just basic over lock stitching… I am intrigued and have seen that the modern Sergers have a blade drop down ability which my very old machine does not.. I would like to be able to actually learn to sew more craft projects (aprons and doll clothes and pillow cases) with out having to go back and forth from my sewing machine to my Serger.. I would also like to learn how to sew spandex type fabric on the Serger.
-
I would love to win the serger.

My 700D is 21 years old and I’m still learning! I’ve been sewing garments & crafts for almost 50 years and I’m still learning! I love all aspects of sewing. Until last month, I’ve never sewn with knits. I’m so intimidated by the stretch of the fabric and worry about sewing the seams with no waves while keeping the stretch,
I would like to learn, understand and be able to serge knit garments with a serger/overlock. Every article tells you that using your serger to sew knits is sooooo easy. I need to learn how to master the serger controls.
I loved the tutorial on serger/overlocks. I will be reading it again, many times. Thank you for all the tips and information.

Oh wow, where does one start? Back in the 70’s my mother worked three jobs to make ends meet and one was at a sewing factory using overlockers. I never learned to use one, so it would be wonderful to add this skill to my repertoire, before my mom passes, so that I can make things for her and have her know that her skills are not lost with her. It is so generous of you Bernina. Thank you for the opportunity and good luck to everyone that enters.
-
I would like to learn how to use my serger. I have taken two rounds of new owners classes trying to figure out how to use it but no matter what I do I can’t seem to get the stitches correct. Sigh. Now it probably hates me because I put it away at least 5 years ago in a caring case and haven’t tried again to use it. So what I would like to learn is how to use it without having the thread become a tangled mess. I ‘upgraded’ to the BERNINA but have only finished the projects I did in my new owners class. Even in class the tech spent more time fixing my machine than I spent stitching, or should I say tangling…. No one could figure out what I was doing wrong. I plan on watching the tutorials and maybe something will click. I had a serger before this one that I used a lot and I miss the ability to quickly do a rolled hem.
-
I’d like to learn some decorative stitching with a serger.
-
Some new techniques, thanks!
-
I would like to sew knit fabrics
-
I’m really interested in seam allowances. They are very specific when sewing on a sewing machine…usually 5/8 inch for garments and 1/4 inch for quilts…and measurements on the machine make it easy. However, it’s not as straight forward with a serger since the knife cuts off the extra seam allowance and the width of the actual stitch matters. Is there a good rule of thumb or is it one of those things that you get better at as you practice? I don’t think I’ve ever heard this explained. Thanks for the giveaway!
-

“What do you want to learn about serging?”

For example I believe that knit material would be a very good fit for using a serger as the material stretches. Also instead of having to do French seems on the inside of a pillow case, I think using a serger would be better and quicker. I love finding out about this web site with tutorials on using a serger.
Thanks, Debbie Schoenfeld -

Also want to try some arts and crafts projects now that I have time. A serger that takes less than an hour to thread would be a god send!

I have had a Bernina serger for about 20 years, but we never became friends. I have always had problems threading and then adjusting the tensions and, due to cognitive difficulties (MS), I don’t see that changing. I would love a new machine, and to learn the new techniques, so I may get back to serging like I used to and can then pass my machine on to someone with more brain power. Oh, how I wished to be able to use my serger, rather than my SE765, when I was making masks for our local homeless shelter last year!
