Wish I’d thought of the applique before I sewed the top together!

I am working on my first “official” quilt, a sampler quilt with 6 different types of blocks. I taught myself to quilt many years ago, but found quilting repetitive compared to making clothing for my children. I recently retired and moved to a community with very active sewing and quilt groups. Several of my immediate neighbors are avid quilters, so I decided to take a beginning quilting class. I have learned much and have enjoyed using the Quilter program of my Version 8 Designer Plus software to audition the different fabrics for the blocks. My only problem with the class; it’s not moving fast enough! I am thoroughly enjoying the companionship and all the quilting skills I’m learning!

Like many die hard quilters, I try to incorporate something new in my quilting journey. So I am always appreciative of the great ideas that come my way. I have two projects going at once. 🙂
1) While at a fall quilt show, I bought a cougar printed panel and surrounded it with pieced crimson and gray blocks. I plan on completing this quilted throw with a soft cuddle backing and black faux binding (from an earlier WeAllSew posting). Just in time for a summer birthday gift.
2) I didn’t set out to start this second project,…. I was looking through a group of patterns and came across one which highlighted using 9 1/2″ rectangular blocks in groups of two and threes. AND the pattern also whittles down your stash of fabrics. Now this twin size quilt top is done and waiting to be quilted. I thought I’d quilt in the ditch and use my Bernina rulers for the borders. -
I’m repairing my daughter’s birthday quilt from age 3… she is 48!!!

I have been working on my Grandson’s quilt since 2009 and am down to sewing the rows together. I quilted each of the 30 – 12″ blocks, then sewed the rows together, and am now sewing the last of 6 rows together. Whew! Once I sew the 6th row to the other 5 rows, I will quilt the outer border and bind it. I started it on my Bernina 440 and finishing it with my Bernina 560. My Granddaughter is using my 440 now. The blocks are my version of a Mariner’s Compass. I modified a Mariner’s Compass block so that I could paper piece it. My Grandson picked out this hard block and the colors. I hope to have it finished by his birthday in September. I do other projects occasionally as this quilt stresses me out.
