Serger Tablecloth with Decorative Flatlock and Rolled Hem

I recently got these beautiful bowls for a big family get-together and decided to make a large tablecloth to cover my little outdoor ugly tables. I didn’t have a lot of time to put this together and figured the best way to whip something up is with the serger. In today’s blog post I’m showing how I took four yards of gauze fabric, some decorative serger thread and my bernette 64 to AIRLOCK to make this stunning tablecloth.

Ok, let’s get stitching!

Materials and Supplies to Make a Serger Tablecloth with Decorative Flatlock and Rolled Hem

Measurements are Width by Height

Steps to Make a Serger Tablecloth with Decorative Flatlock and Rolled Hem

  1. Measure the table(s). My tables measure 24″x48″ and I am putting them short end together for a total measurements of 24″x96″.
  2. Cut the light-colored gauze fabric in half to (2) 1-yard cuts.
  3. Set serger up for 3-Thread wide Flatlock with standard thread in the left needle, Pearl Crown Rayon in the Upper Looper, and standard serger thread in the Lower Looper.
  4. Follow cheat sheet for tension and test stitch to make sure it looks good, adjust as needed.
  5. Find the center length of the dark-colored gauze, 36″ and mark (3) lines 2″ apart from one another.
  6. Measure in 10″ from each end of the dark-colored gauze and mark (3) lines 2″ apart from one another.
  7. There should now be a total of (9) lines.
  8. Fold on each line with wrong sides together. Line up the “fold” with the edge of the serger and stitch the 3-Thread wide Flatlock cutting about 1/8″.
  9. When finished stitching, gently open the seam to reveal the decorative Flatlock. Sew the remaining (8) lines the same way. When you are finished, you will have (9) decorative Flatlock stitches.
  10. Press the seams open/flat.
  11. Now let’s add the light-colored gauze. Place one of the 1 yd light-colored gauze pieces (width) wrong side together with the dark-colored gauze and Flatlock together. Repeat with the other 1 yd light-colored gauze on the other end. Press.
  12. Set serger up for Rolled hem with standard thread in the Right needle, Pearl Crown Rayon in the Upper Looper, and the Polyarn in the Lower Looper.
  13. Follow cheat sheet for tension and test stitch to make sure it looks good, adjust as needed.
  14. Line up one edge of one of the short ends of the tablecloth with the edge of the serger and stitch the Rolled hem cutting about 1/8″ off.
  15. Serge all four sides crossing the thread tail ends.
  16. Use Fray Check on the ends, let them dry, and cut the tails off.
  17. Put the tablecloth on the table, set up plates, or in my case the new bowls, and just wait for the compliments to flow from your family!

I hope you enjoyed this serger project and it showed you how useful and decorative a serger in your life really can be. I love my bernette 64 AIRLOCK as it was affordable and allows me to create unique and useful things!! If you enjoyed this sort of blog post, let me know in the comments.
