Couching Fibers Along, Part Two

Grüezi mitenand! Hello BERNINA Q . . . Quilters?!

Here is BERNINA Ambassador Carolina Asmussen, from Carolina Asmussen Designs.

Last week I officially invited you to this one-of-a-kind project, the Couching Fibers Along!

If for some reason you lost the announcement you can click here. In my previous post, you can download and print (don’t forget 100% scale) the project’s template and also the list of materials.

I’m very excited because today is actually our first week of real stitching! So, let’s make some noise with our BERNINAs.

Couching Fibers Along – Week 2

Before we start stitching, my first tip for couching fibers is to ALWAYS coordinate the color of the thread and the color of the fiber. This will help keep the magic effect of the fiber just floating on the top of the fabric.

For this week, we will start free-motion couching fibers at the blue flower design.

Couching Fibers Along – Week 2

Materials for Week 2:

  • Quilt sandwich (white cotton fabric with the design template, batting and backing fabric)
  • DMC Tapestry Wool color 7301 coordinated with Aurifil 50wt color 2784 (we will call this combination our color 1)
  • DMC Tapestry Wool color 7465 coordinated with Aurifil 50wt color 2340 (we will call this combination our color 2)
  • DMC Tapestry Wool color 7799 coordinated with Aurifil 50wt color 2715 (we will call this combination our color 3)
  • BERNINA Adjustable Ruler Foot #72 and couching inserts

Preparing the BERNINA Adjustable Ruler Foot

Because we are doing much more than ruler work this time, we need to attach the couching insert to the bottom of the BERNINA Adjustable Ruler Foot #72.

The couching inserts come in a package with 3 different sizes: 2.2mm, 1.8mm and 1.4mm.

For this entire project, we will use the insert with the larger gap at the center, the 2.2mm.

Now you just need to snap the couching insert to the bottom of the foot and attach to your machine.

We will be using the BSR1 (BERNINA Q Series) to stitch!

Free-motion Couching Color 1

This week we are working with the three first colors of our project.

Wind a BERNINA bobbin with Aurifil 50wt color 2784 and get the DMC Tapestry Wool color 7301 close to your machine.

Watch the video below to start stitching the color 1.

Free-motion Couching Color 2

Wind a BERNINA bobbin with Aurifil 50wt color 2340 and get the DMC Tapestry Wool color 7465 close to your machine.

Watch the video below to start stitching the color 2.

Free-motion Couching Color 3

Wind a BERNINA bobbin with Aurifil 50wt color 2715 and get the DMC Tapestry Wool color 7799 close to your machine.

Watch the video below to start stitching the color 3.

And just like that! In less than an hour we have the first flower ready. I hope that you are having fun and feeling already more comfortable with this new technique.

See you next week!

Uf Widerluege!

    • Hello! All three videos should be available on the blog post. Please let us know if you are still having issues viewing them. Thank you and happy stitching!

  • Hi, my top thread keeps breaking. Any suggestions? This is my first attempt at free motion. I’m using a practice “sandwich” before I start the couching sew along. My practice piece not only looks terrible but every inch or two the thread breaks:(

  • Never mind:) What a beautiful difference having the correct needle makes! I had thought I had the right needle in my machine, but did not. The 80/12 works beautifully. No thread breakage and my work looks so much better:)

  • I need some advice. I posted a picture in the Bernina fb site. Not sure if I can insert a picture here. My yarn builds up in the foot opening, yes I am using the largest hole, it forms a not and then I have to cut it underneath the foot to get it out. I raised the height of the foot so it could move more freely and the thread breaks. They yarn is three strands. Am I supposed to just use one strand? Any other suggestions. I am sewing on Bernina 820. Thank you.

    • Hi, I’m not sure about the type of yarn you are using at home, for this project we are using DMC Tapestry Wool. It works pretty well and it is no need of dividing the strands. If you are using the same yarn and the problem still happening, you probably need to move the quilt sandwich faster. The knots are usually formed by stitching multiple times at the same place. You really want to slide the fabric under the couching foot. Side note, I love your BERNINA 820, you have a great work space 🙂
